Nick’s Approach to Teaching

Nick Bulgarino is the Low Brass Instructor at DeMatha Catholic High School. He also is a clinician for the Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra and runs an independent studio teaching musicians of all grade levels from central Maryland and Washington D.C.

Nick has worked with students of all levels, from students who audition into All-State Ensembles to those who want to improve their skills. He specializes in helping students with practice room strategies and range limitations.

“Whenever I work with students, my approach will vary based on their needs as musicians. That being said, I make sure to lay the foundation for two core concepts that apply to any trombonist. First, if you can sing it, you can play it. Your mind needs to understand the music so the body can translate it to the instrument. The second concept is that there are only two components in making sound on a brass instrument: lips and air. Understanding what the body does to make sound is important for producing the best sound you can. I explore these two concepts with students because they are proven to improve our sound and musicality.”
